CHAPTER TWELVE
SHE WAS TIRED of the games.
The prince could not kiss her one evening and then share moonlight walks with someone else another night. It didnât work that way. It didnât matter that he was a prince or that her heart raced every time they were in the same room. She had her standards.
And thatâs why for the next ten days, sheâd reduced their meetings to daily status emails. It was much more efficient. And so much safer for her heart.
However, when she glanced up from her desk to find Leo standing in the doorway of her office, she was caught off guard.
She swallowed hard. âYour Highness, I wasnât expecting you. Can I do something for you?â
âYour Highness?â He frowned at her. âWeâre back to using titles?â
She gave a slight shrug before saving the current document on her laptop. She had a feeling the princeâs visit would take a bit of time.
âToday is the final day of the queenâs la fête.â
âLa fête?â
âYes. Technically itâs my motherâs sixtieth birthday but she refuses to celebrate her birthday. She says sheâs too old to have birthdays. So they call her celebration the queenâs la fête.â
âOh, I see. Iâll make sure to keep out of the way. Besides I have plenty of work to doââ
âNo, you donât understand. You are invited.â
Bianca pressed a hand to her chest. âMe. But Iâm a nobody.â
âYou are my guest.â
Her heart stuttered. Was he asking her to be his date? Wait. No. He must mean his guest as in a general invitation because heâd moved on to that woman in the gardens. Biancaâs mood dampened a bit.
She shook her head. âI couldnât intrude. It should be a private family event.â
âItâs not private nor a family-only event. This will be a big state dinner with fireworks afterward.â
âFireworks?â Now that was her kind of party.
He smiled and nodded. âAnd there is a place at the table with your name on it.â
âBut whatâs the dress code?â
âFormal.â
âAs in black tie?â
He nodded. âIf that is a problemââ
âIâve got a formal gown, but I had planned to wear it to your sisterâs wedding.â
âThen I will see that you get a new gown for the wedding.â
âNo, you canât. That would be too much.â
âYou are doing me the favor. It is the least I can do.â
âHow so?â
âBecause these events are usually stuffy and can veer into matters of state. I would like to avoid that this evening. And with you there, it will make the evening more festive. Perhaps the politics can be avoided for one evening. Your attendance would be in honor of the queen.â
When he put it that way, how could she say no?
âOkay. Iâll go.â
âGood. I can stop by your room on the way to the cocktail hour.â
That would be too much like a date and she needed to make sure the boundaries were clear. She couldnât let herself get swept up in the evening. She was hired help. Nothing more.
âItâs okay. Iâll make my way.â
His eyes reflected disappointment, but in a blink it was gone.
